The children have received various gifts from Uncle Tom that were not useful, so Mother would place them in box labeled The Rabbit's Nest. The children go snooping one day and knock it to the floor breaking a cut glass bowl. Mother comes in and explains the Rabbit's Nest. It was slang for a place where you put things you can't use or don't like to use, presents people send you that not right for you.
