Miller, Rick Bloody Bill Longley : a Biography Denton, TX University of North Texas Press 2011 1574413058 / 9781574413052 2nd Rev Ed, 1st Printing Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Photos xviii, 371 pp, red clothcovered boards w/black lettering on the spine, glossy grey dj w/illustrated front & rear panel w/text on the rear panel. Bill Longley's reputation as the equal of Hardin and Thompson was one of his own creation. He was his own press agent by virtue of a series of letters and interviews that comprised his "autobiography." Until he was caught there was a real dearth of documentation of his stories. With research the author determined that Longley was a wandering gunman, but the facts do not back up his image as a nervy gunfighter. The author through his research located & identified the outlaw's body. This edition includes new items tht have come to light and puts to rest some of the myths and legends that Longley had created. Post Reconstruction in Texas in the mid-1870s was still primitive w/communities isolated from each other. Law enforcement at the local level could cope w/drunks, collecting taxes and attending courts when in session, but when an outrageous crime occurred or depredations in a community were at a level that taxed or overwhelmed the local sheriff, there was seldom any recourse except a vigilante movement. During 1874 the Hoo Doo War erupted in the Texas Hill Country of Mason County. The feud began with the rise of the mob under Sheriff John Clark. Price:
