The author recounts the story of the many people who contributed to the early history of Fort Worth. She coveres the early Spanish explorers who mapped the area; the invasions of the white men and the long and bloody war between them and the prairie Indians, the establishment of the fort and the tiny settlement that grew up nears its walls. The narrative continues through the era of slavery, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction. It describes the wagon trains that traveled westward and the cattle herds that went north through the city that became to be known as "Cowtown."
