The story was based on the letters Mangan wrote to his mother during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He saw lots of incidents the needed further discriptions. He was involved in Normandy and the Battle of the Hedgerows, Saint-Lo breakout, liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge and releasing prisoners at Dachau.
