The Golden Road began in Mexico and pushed north to San Diego, and eventually reached the shores of the upper San Francisco Bay, with later extension through the "Redwood Empire" to the Oregon border. El Camino Real, as it was called - the King's Highway - came into being when the threat of a Russian invasion from Alaska was repelled by Spanish troops in 1774.
