John Enys was a young British ensign in Quebec in 1776 with the contingent that helped to preserve British sovereignty over Canada. He fought in the Battle of Valcour Island and in raids against the frontiers of Vermont and New York. He provides accounts of the ravages that were inflicted by Regulars, Loyalists, and Indians. He sailed back to England in 1782 and was returned to do garrison duty in Ontario. Near the end of his tour of duty he traveled through the formers colonies as far south as Norfolk, Virginia. The tales of his travels porvides glimpses of life in the young Republic.
