It was a combination of ethnic and religious elements, especially New England Puritan and Scottish Calvinist. The East New Jersey colonists founded compact settlements and local government was of more importnace than the county organization. East New Jersey was dominated by the port of New York. It was a rebellious colony. The insistence of the proprietors upon collecting quitrents caused unedding strife under whatever proprietor or governor. Some writing and underlining in the text and margins, several pages have creased corners.
