The book contains a concise summary of the advances that took place in mapping the "Greater Souwthwest" after Spain's entrance into thise lands. The authors discuss the roles that Spanish explorers and mapmakers played in bringing knowledge of the New World to Europe. The entradas of Pánfilo de Narváez and Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Fray Marcos de Niza and Franciso Vásquez de Coronado, and Hernando de SOto and Luis de Moscoso into the Greater Southwest of North America were crucial in the dissemination of information and images of the newly discovered lands. The volume contains 121 black-and-white and 20 color reproductions of early maps and couments and concludes with an annotated cartobibliography.
