The Frontier Battalion was established to deal with the Indian menace while the Special Force was created for the purpose of ending the raids across the Rio Grande.

He was elected as a lawman in Mason County. He became immersed in territorial Arizona partisan politics and was a champion of the ranchers. He ran at odds with the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday.
