The sotry of Federico Villalba, who began ranching near the village of San Carlos, near Lajitas, Texas. He eventually crossed over the Rio Grande to ranch at Burro Mesa. He married, built his herd of cattle and angora goats, mined cinnabar and opened a store at Cerro Villalba (later Study Butte) and a leather goods store in Santa Elena. The book presents the Mexican point of view for the early years of settlement in the Big Bend area.
