The book is a personal chronicle of Helen and William Chapman of their daily life during the formative years of Brownsville from 1848 through 1852. The Chapmans witnessed and participated in the betterment and eventual evacuation of Matamoras, Mexico by United States troops in 1848, the establishment of Fort Brown and the growth of Brownsville, Texas.
