The book is the story of Duval's adventures during the Goliad Massacre and his escape from the Mexicans. Per Jenkins - "This is the most literate of all 19th century Texas memoirs. It is authentic history, with only a little exaggeration thrown in here and there." Duval gives an account of his capture and escape from the massacre of Fannin's command. The appendix contains "List of Men under the Command of Col. J. W. Fannin in 1835-1836." The pages end at 135 and begin again at page 241 for the appendix.
