The authors provide accounts of the military engagements in the Indian Territory that were often the focus of the operations in the Trans-Mississippi West. The Five Civilized Tribes found themselves caught in a dilemman between the warring white men, with their allegiance sought by both sides. The guerrilla-type operations and tactics that were the specialty of the Confederate Indians under Stand Watie is examined. Brigadier General Stand Watie was the last Confederate general to lay down his arms.
