Gray arrived in Texas in early 1836, carrying in his saddlebags several small volumes filled with daily entries made on his trip westward. The diary was kept in compliance with orders of his employers (Thomas Green and Albert T. Burnley), who requested a reliable record of observations regarding potential land purchases. Grey attended the 1836 Convention, including in his diary "a faithful record of its proceedings, in some cases mroe complete than the official journal." On his second trip in 1837, he settled his entire family in Houston. He soon became clerk of the state House of Representatives, and secretary of the Senate, and later clerk of the state Supreme Court. facsimile of Howes # G-341, Eberstadt #353, and BTB #79.
