Huffman's pictures tell the story of the cowboy at work, at rest, and at play. He came to to Fort Keogh, Montana Territory for the position of post photographer in 1878. These one hundred and twenty-four photographs tell the story of the Montana frontier. prev owner wrote on verso of the ffep.

272 pp, black cloth covered boards w/bronze lettering, map endpapers, glossy black-white endpapers w/black-and-white pictorial front panel w/orange-wht lettering. The book contains 125 photographs from the L. A. Huffman originals. Huffman was a post photographer at Fort Keogh just after the last war with the Sioux. He set up a studio in Miles City and went into forbidden reservations among the Indians. He trekked through Montana territory, went on hunting expeditions, and ranched to make ends meet. Prev. owner's bookplate on FPD, dj rubbed along the edges, small tears on top edge of the dj.

Includes an Inscribed photo of the author to Col. John Livingston. This is the story of the people who once lived in the basin of the Yellowstone River. The story begins with the sons of aged Pierre de la Verendrye. Some of the names: William Clark, John Colter, Jedediah Smith, Captain Reynolds, George Custer, have not been forgotten. The book has a long chapter on outlaws and lawlessness in Montana and Wyoming. There is information on the Johnson County War, the hanging of Jim Averill and Cattle Kate, as well as that of Flat Nose George Curry, and the crimes of the Wild Bunch. Six-Guns #299.
