1 Brook, Stephen and Griffiths, Ken, Illustrated by Photos The Panhandle
Los Angeles, CA Guess?, Inc. Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket/Near Fine Slipcase Photos Inscribed & SIGNED by the Author
unpaginated, black cloth boards w/black & white pastedown picture on the front board. Inscribed "Lifes not a rehearsal I hope" & SIGNED by Griffiths, in black cloth covered slipcase, (slipcase professionally built by bookbinder). The volume is about the panhandle of Texas. A land of vistas & seemingly endless expanses. It is the southernmost extension of the prairies that sweep across central Canada. The early ranches, such as XIT, were two or three million acres in extent . Depending on the terrain, between fifteen & thirty acres of land are required to raise a single head of cattle. The largest ranches were broken up decades ago, but Pitchfork still owns 167,000 acres, as does the JA Ranch, though most of that land is leased & a mere 50,000 acres are used for raising JA livestock. The great ranches are located to the east of the major Panhandle cities of Lubbock & Amarillo. To the east of the cities, the plains suddenly crack & crumble. Reddish cliffs plunge down f/the plains onto scruffy scrubland below. this is the escarpment known as the Caprock. Most of the photos were taken in Donley County, Texas. The county has no more than 4500 inhabitants, & its county seat, Clarendon, has population of about 2500 inhabitants. The volume celebrates the landscape of the Panhandle & those who earn their living from it.
