Major General Robert Howe was ranked seventh in seniority among American general officers at the end of the Revolutionary War. He was born into North Carolina planter aristocracy, and with the outbreak of war in 1775, he was appointed colonel of the Second North Carolina regiment. After Howe's forces were defeated by the British in Savannah in 1778, he joined General Washington's army. He was division commander in the New York Highlands, on two occasions he was called upon to put down mutinies in the Continental Army. He presided over the court-martials of Generals Benedict Arnold and Alexander McDougall, and he sat on the jury for the spy trial of British Major John André. light stain on top edge.
