The early tales in the book tell of the lives of Kiowa and Comanche peoples twenty-five to fifty years before the author met them. His tales are set in the 1920s and the 1930s. The author tells of the Indians who rather than settle on reservations, claimed farms and grew up. From this stock came artists, farmers, ranchers, ministers, engineers, athletic coaches, teachers, and college presidents.
