The book explores the race relations during the Mexican Republic, the Republic of Texas and early statehood. The author exposes the ethnic warfare that dominated the frontier. The struggle between Anglos and Indians for land. He tells how Scotch-Irish settlers clashed with Wichitas, Caddos, and other farming tribes and then challenged the Comanches and Kiowas for their hunting grounds. He tells how the Texas government encouraged the Rangers to annihilate INdian villages, including women and children, spreading terror so that the survivors and neighboring Native groups would want to leave. The policy succeeded: by the 1870s, Indians had been driven form central and western Texas.
