xvi, 293 pp, quarterbound w/wht-brown illustrated boards w/brown cloth covered spine. Original narratives of Texas history and adventure. Book about everyday people and it provides depiction of social life in Texas when it was as a colony & a republic. The author served w/the Texas Rangers & lived for awhile w/the Comanches, learning their language & representing them in making a treaty w/the Texans in 1838. He provides anecdotes on men he knew such as James Bowie, Sam Houston, Stephen Austin, David G. Burnet, Gail Bordern, Padre Michael Muldoon, R.M. Williamson, and others. After some lawless years, served through the War for Texas Independence & later as a Ranger. He was the blacksmith who forged the knife bearing Colonel Bowie's name. The author dictated it to his daughter when he was in his nineties. prev owner's embossing stamp on half title page.
