The story of the deadlisest episode of vigilante juctice took place during the first six weeks of 1864. A small corps of armed horsemen swept through the goldmining towns of southwest Montana and hanged twenty-one troublemakers, including a rogue sheriff, Henry Plummer. The executions in Montana where carried out with military precision in full public view and by leading citizens who did not bother to conceal their identifies beneath masks or hoods.
