She came from a wealthy family and seldom did without necessities or luxuries. She usually employed two full-time servants and often hired three or four. A new cook was shown how to prepare desired dishes of Alice would copy recipes from her personal cookbook for the servant to use. The booklet contains over one hundred of her recipes that were tested. One of recipes for her helpful hints of hair preservative is :"to prevent hair from falling out, take 1 teaspoon of salt, 30 grains of quinine, and a pint of bay run. Rub the hair thoroughly every night. Another remedy is to take a handful of Southern wood leaves, cover them with alcohol, and let them stand till the strength is extracted. Add 1 teaspoon of this to 1/3 cup of water, and wet the scalp thoroughly once a day."
