Ruth and Helen are invited to visit the plantation owned by Nettie's Aunt Rachel in South Carolina. They learn that Curly Smith has run away, disguised as a girl, after being falsely accused of robbery. En route to South Carolina, the firls meet Uncle Simmy, an elderly black man caring for the blind Miss Catalpa, whose money was lost in a bank failure. Miss Miggs, whom the girls meet on a boat, accuses the girls of robbing her. The girls go to a hop at a hotel, which then isolated by flood waters. some corner wear & worn at top & bottom of the spine, foxing to some of the pages, prev owner wrote name on FPD, prev owner underlining in text, hinges cracking.
