42 pp, bright blu cloth covered boards w/ten gilt cockerel illustrations on the front & rear covers, gilt papercovered slipcase. Dulac rewrote the Russian folktale into English in order for him to illustrate the story. The tale of a king who lived in a wonderful kingdom. In his youth he was a mighty warrior and fought many battles against the King of the North, the King of the East, and the King of the West and had beaten them all. But as he grew older, he grew to like peace. The kings again threaten him. Then one day an Old Magician comes to him and provides an answer to his plea for help. He gives him a golden Cockerel who will crow when his kingdom is threatened and he will face the direction that the threat will come from.
