The Virginia Company of London issued instructions to the first settlers of Virginia to employ a number of men "for two months in the discovery of the river above you and on the country about you." This was first assigned to Captain Christopher Newport and Captain Anthony Gosnold. Captain Newport led party of twenty-three men up the river and Captain John Smith was a member of this party. The explorations in 1607 and ensuing two years were primarily planned and carried out by Captain John Smith.
