He was born into North Carolina planter aristocracy, and with the outbreak of war in 1775, he was appointed colonel of the Second North Carolina regiment. After Howe's forces were defeated by the British in Savannah in 1778, he joined General Washington's army. He was division commander in the New York Highlands, on two occasions he was called upon to put down mutinies in the Continental Army.
